The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkinson

The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkinson: Book Review

“Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’”

[1 Chronicles 4:10]

This simple prayer is the foundation for the book titled The Prayer of Jabez, written by Bruce Wilkinson. This short book is focused on the life and prayer of Jabez that can be found in entirety in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10.

Breaking Down The Prayer of Jabez

The aim of this book is to encourage the reader to be looking to God and His influence in our life through the good times and the hard times.  Asking for God’s blessing in our life isn’t a self-centered prayer for prosperity, but rather as Wilkinson states, “when we seek God’s blessing as the ultimate value in life, we are throwing ourselves entirely into the river of His will and power and purpose for us.” To ask God for His blessing, and then to wait and watch for how He answers this prayer in our lives, increases our faith in Him and brings Him glory.

Jabez showed a strong desire to be near God as well as a strong desire to avoid the pain that sin brings to our lives. Wilkinson highlights this when he asks, “When was the last time you asked God to keep you away from temptation? In the same way that God wants you to ask for more blessing, more territory, and more power, He longs to hear you plead for safekeeping from evil.” We are also following Jesus’ example in prayer by asking God to “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” [Matthew 6:13].

At the conclusion of this book, Wilkinson encourages the reader to take on a challenge of praying this short prayer meaningfully everyday for 30 days, then watching for how God will answer this prayer in your life and giving Him the glory for the answered prayers.
