Go! Candlewood‘s Summer Evangelism Training (SET) is in full swing and Omaha is taking a fresh look at the gospel and how it can have an eternal impact on our lives as well as the lives of those around us. The evangelism class offered every Wednesday night in June and July starts out with worship, followed by a short video clip on Bill Hybel’s book Just Walk Across the Room, which leads into small breakout discussions, and wraps up with prayer. As I’ve witnessed over the years, and yet again this year, these training sessions can be challenging at times but they are always encouraging.
As Hybel’s states, “Believers universally affirm that evangelism is a vital part of what God calls them to do, but very few make a practice of doing it. They feel awkward and ill-equipped, either because they’ve never been trained, or because their lack of interaction with non- Christians prevents them from using and developing the skills they do have.”
The word evangelism can send shivers down my spine. When people start talking about evangelism my heart starts pounding, my palms start sweating, and my mind starts racing a mile a minute. I can’t help but start thinking things like:
“What are people going to think of me? Will they reject me? Will they reject the gospel? What if I don’t explain Jesus’ love clearly enough? Does God really need me and can He use me? Can I really make a difference? Is it even worth it?”
As it turns out, I’m not the only one who experiences these types of feelings and the small breakout discussions have offered me a safe place where I can be honest about my fears, doubts, and anxieties with others who can relate. From watching the videos, reading the book, and sharing stories with others, this year’s class has already been a great reminder for me, and so many others in Omaha, that sharing the gospel does not have to be something scary and complicated, it can be something as simple and as easy as just walking across the room.
