New Year’s Resolutions

Many of us make annual New Year’s resolutions, only to abandon them while the year is in its infancy. New Year’s resolutions are usually great goals, but we can lack the willpower to keep them. In Psalm 101, King David speaks boldly about his resolve to govern his home and kingdom with integrity and righteousness.

This year, an easy first step is to pray for the same declarations in your home – to have integrity and to live righteously. Prayer is powerful and can change lives! What do you predict will change in your life as a result? Possibly your

  • behavior
  • attitudes
  • words
  • choice of movies and entertainment

It’s never been a better time to focus on keeping your word and to be less influenced by the world. We know that determination alone can’t carry us, and King David knew that too. He made bold statements and followed through because he knew that God was loving, just, and dependable. God is the real power behind resolutions. With God’s help, you can make bold resolutions and follow through with them as well.

Dedicate Yourself to God

What can I offer the Lord for all he has done for me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and praise the Lord’s name for saving me. I will keep my promise to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

Psalm 116:12-14

Have you established a tradition for New Year’s Eve? If not, perhaps it could involve

  • some time in prayer with your loved ones
  • sharing your resolutions

By sharing your resolutions, your family and or friends can help hold you accountable.

Be a Blessing of Hospitality

Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone – especially those in the family of faith.

Galatians 6:10 NLT

Are you having a hard time knowing what to do for a new year resolution? Being a blessing to others with hospitality is a great place to start! Look for opportunities to serve by listening to those around you. It can be easy to live in your own private bubble; however, try reaching out and making new relationships.

When you begin a new friendship, you have a chance to model Christ in your life by showing them the love of God through kindness.

Ideas on How to Get to Know Your Neighbor

Do you know your neighbors? If you do not, there are a variety of fun ways to get to know them.

  • Host a block party or BBQ
  • Mow your lawn when your neighbor is mowing theirs and take that as an opportunity to get to know them
  • Offer your elderly neighbor to shovel their driveway
  • Give away some fresh fruit or vegetables from your garden
  • Bake cookies for the family next door
  • Deliver holiday gifts with card

And the list goes on! There are so many ways to show kindness, and soon it can become second nature. All these examples are also opportunities to share the Gospel. If you are interested in learning ways to get your children involved in evangelism, please click here.

Make a Plan

As this year comes to a close, and a new year begins, take time to talk with your household, and make a plan on getting to know your neighbors. Having a home known for hospitality is a great and achievable resolution.

With God’s help, you can step out of your comfort zone this year and get to know your neighbors. He can give you wisdom and guidance to discern the needs of your neighbors and to be the blessing in their lives, all you have to do is ask!
