“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” – Romans 12:2 (ESV)
I like working with my hands and doing projects. Recently, I took the family out to an antique shop where we went up and down the aisles looking for something that was old and rusty. We found a Folger’s™ coffee tin from many years back, and it was perfect for what we wanted to do. It was in pretty bad shape, so we paid a mere five dollars, then took our treasure home.
What began was a process of renewal and transformation. We first cleaned the dust and dirt off the can. Then, we prepared the can for its new purpose in life as a candle and glued a wick to the center of the tin. We melted down wax and added a warm vanilla fragrance to the melted wax. Once the melted wax was ready, we poured the wax into our coffee tin. The result of the work was a beautiful fragrant new candle in a vessel with historic charm. The coffee can was transformed and made for a new purpose, shining light and spreading fragrance in our home.
Christ is renewing and transforming us as well. He is renewing our minds and making us more like himself. Because of the gospel, we have a new purpose in life: to shine the light of the gospel and the fragrance of life and death to those around us.
Romans 12 tells us that our transformation begins with our minds, our thoughts. Colossians 3:2 says to set your mind on the things above, not on earthly things. To set your mind means to fixate on them. What are you putting into your mind? What are you thinking about a lot? What you think about directly impacts your transformation.
Let us think about the things above today and allow Christ to transform us.
